A Personal Message from Glenys CoxGlenys Pic
Hi, and welcome to ‘Online Horse College .com‘!
Thanks for taking the time to find out more about our exciting new online horse course where you can train to become a Stable/Yard Manager.

This is not just another course where we give you the videos, workbooks and other learning resources and that is it! You are assessed to confirm that you have the knowledge and once you are competent you will receive your Government Accredited Qualification.

All of our courses are Government Approved for training in the equine industry and this course is especially designed to further your knowledge in horse care. You are probably already working in the horse industry but are more interested in horse care than in teaching and would like to take responsibility for more horses.

This is a fantastic way to further your career in the horse industry and discover new skills while continuing to care for horses.

What will I learn in my Stable/Yard Manager course?

Before commencing this course, students should already have experience in caring for horses.

If you have completed your ‘Working with Horses’ course then you may receive credit for some of these components.  If you do not have your ‘Coupon Code’ to receive your discount then please contact us prior to enrolment

Your ‘Stable/ Yard Manager’ course outline includes the horse care areas of study listed below with the following (optional) electives.

Co-Requisites

Prior to commencing (or as a co-requisite) this course, you should have a current St John (or equivalent) First Aid Certificate.  Although this is not a teaching qualification, it is highly recommended that you also complete the online ASC Beginner Coaching Course

  • First aid – This workbook covers some of the basic aspects of dealing with a first aid scenario, again with the help of Risky Ranch. As a Stable Manager it will be part of your role to make decisions and prioritise actions in an event of an injured rider/person.

Horse Care

Taking Care of the Horse

  • Basic Reproduction – An introduction to the reproductive system of the horse, including information detailing parts of the female and male systems, gestation and signs of foaling.
  • Physiology – We commence this subject with a brief look at three body systems of the horse the nervous, musculo-skeletal and endocrine systems. You will be provided with an abundance of information into the inner workings of these systems and also take a general look at some of the functions and essential components of these systems.?After that we will take a look at three body systems of the horse the respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems. Again there will be an abundance of information into the inner workings of these systems and we will also take a general look at some of the functions and essential components of these systems.
  • Conformation – The term ‘conformation’ refers to a horse’s bone structure, musculature and body proportions. Conformation is the visual shape and build of a horse, the physical structure, simply the way it is ‘put together’. In this subject we will discuss general desirable traits and well as common conformation faults.
  • Nutrition requirements of horses – This lesson topic focuses on the nutritional requirements of horses but includes a brief refresher into the digestive system of the horse. The following chapters provide useful information about important nutrients and include details regarding the signs and symptoms of nutrient deficiencies and overloading.
  • Feedstuffs – Horses require clean, quality feed provided at regular intervals to maintain digestive health. This workbook takes a basic look at feeding horses and the considerations that need to be given as well as common types of roughages, concentrates and premixed feeds found in today’s market.
  • Additives and Supplements – Determining whether or not to use or whether your horse needs an additive or supplement in their diet can be difficult work. This lesson aims to provide informative yet easy to understand information into the world of horse supplements and additives.
  • Feeding regimes – Due to the delicate nature of the horse digestive system, it is important to develop and adhere to feeding regimes, rules and guidelines which will benefit you and your equine friends.
  • Common ailments – Horses are susceptible to many various injuries and illnesses some of which are due to the demands of the domesticated horse, conformation defaults and climate conditions. This workbook covers some of the more common problems that may be presented when working with horses.
  • Common diseases – Horses are a herd animal which means that diseases can be easily transferred from horse to horse. The week takes a look at common horse related diseases which can pose a threat to the well being of not just horses on your property but the horse industry as well.
  • Horse First aid – When caring for horses it is more than likely at some stage you will have to apply some form of basic first aid. This may be anything from treating a minor cut to keeping a horse comfortable whilst waiting for the vet.

Final Summary In the final part of the ‘Stable/ Yard Manger’ course, we give you a scenario for you to respond to. You will have a limited time to prepare and respond to this scenario as you would if you were working as a professional, employed by a private stable or a riding school, equestrian centre, pony club or other professional environment.

Your Graduation

On successful completion of the ‘Stable Yard Manager’ course, you will receive a ‘Customized Statement of Attainment’ for the relevant horse care and riding units. Further details are available at training.gov.au. Units from this course form part of the Certificate 3 in Sport Coaching and the Certificate 4 in Sport Coaching.

We want you to be qualified in the latest, most up to date courses. If the Training Package changes while you are enrolled we will do our best to change your course into the new Training Package as early as possible. Also, we monitor the latest demands of the horse industry and we will update your course to these demands as early as possible.

How long will my course take?

This course has been designed to be taken full time, over 36 weeks. However, it could take less time if you already

  • have previous experience with horses
  • plan to study for more than 20 hours per week
  • plan to study full time

If you already have previous experience and would like to study full time, this course about learning to care for horses will probably take around a month. Simply let us know if you would like to ‘fast track’ your course!

Of course you may take longer if you like and your enrolment will be valid for up to two years. If you would like to re-enrol for a further two years, just contact us for your updated enrolment details.

Where and how is my course delivered?

All lessons are delivered online through your secure web page with a range of resources such as

  • Workbooks
  • Extension Lessons/Homework
  • Video Tutorials
  • Power Point Presentations
  • Student Resources
  • Other Student Support
  • And Much, Much More!

A combination of practical skills and theoretical knowledge are the main requirements for this qualification and these skills will be developed throughout the course

This ‘Stable Yard Manager’ course will be much more straightforward if you have easy access to an equine environment where you can regularly practice your skills

You will also be able to have regular phone tutorials during the course. In these you can ask us about any particular questions about Stable/Yard Manager, even if it is not specifically included in your course.

Who will supervise my assessments?

Although they will need to be confirmed with us, when you complete most of your online assessments, you will know the results immediately! If you are not happy with the results, you simply take the online assessment again!

If you already have a horse care teacher or equestrian coach, they may be already qualified to supervise and/ or assess your practical assessments or even give us a ‘Third Party Report’. (There is an application process for assessors that must be completed prior to your assessment) Other people who may be qualified to supervise and/ or assess could be the owner/manager of your stable, or someone-one else you know who has considerable experience with horses.  The cost for the practical assessments is paid directly to the assessor.

If this is not possible we can also assess your practical skills with horses and ponies by video. Simply upload or send us a video to view so we can complete your assessment.

You will also be required to ‘self’ assess and ‘peer’ assess your practical activities with horses. A ‘peer’ may be some-one with around the same experience as you with horses. They act as a ‘mirror’ and mark off your checklist as you complete your activities.

We may also conduct some verbal assessments during a phone call or phone tutorial

Some of these assessments may be simulated when it is impractical to assess in a realistic setting.

Will I be accepted into this course?

This online horse course is part of our ‘Career Pathway’ and suitable if you already have substantial experience with horses. If you already have extensive knowledge handling and caring for horses as well as dressage and jumping competition riding you can contact us for an RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) Application.

Alternatively you could consider our ‘Horse Riding Instructor’ course. This course also includes horse care and riding but also includes coaching units. Many horse ridingim instructors continue on their equine career pathway, some in teaching roles and some in other roles within the horse industry (including management).  It is also possible to customize a course to suit your equine learning needs. Please contact us if this sounds like you

Also you should be
