When I was in my early teens, I spoke to several guidance officers at school about horse careers. None of them were supportive with my horse career aspirations.

“There is no money working with horses”

“You would have to be a stable yard and groom all your life”

“No, you will have to find another job and keep horses as a hobby”

The story was the same everywhere but I was determined.

At that time there were no training or qualifications in my country for the horse industry so I

• worked in a horse related industry
• earned enough money doing lots of income creating activities with horses, horse and pony hobbies
• created other equine income streams

until I was able to travel overseas for a year and become qualified as a horse riding instructor.

I was fairly determined even though I was only 20 at the time!

It was difficult. Not only did I need to pay for the course, I had living expenses, travel expenses and did not have the chance to earn any extra income while I was there. I missed my family and most of all I missed my own horses and was not able to continue to progress their training and my equestrian competition career.

Nevertheless, I completed my qualifications, started a business and was soon able to earn more money than the guidance officers who had told me not to work with horses!

As I progressed through my career with horses, I found that there are four main areas where people can make money with horses

Hobby Income with Horses

You may be learning about the basics of horses and your main concern is safety and confidence around horses. You may even be a parent or partner of some-one who ride horses.

If what I have described above then you could definitely earn an income with horses with many of the suggested ‘horse hobby businesses’ in this book.

Equine Employment

For almost forty years I have worked in the horse industry and have made money with many of the ways in this book. During that time I have owned several successful horse businesses, gained several equine and equestrian qualifications and have worked/ taught in the US, UK, Europe, Asia and of course Australia so I understand the difference in the equine industry in various parts of the world.
